Artist to Watch: Amber Rubarth

During Amber Rubarth‘s first night back in New York after touring Japan, she invited several friends to share the stage. Performing for nearly 90 minutes, Rubarth’s girl next door charm and witty, emotion-filled vocals captivated all at the newly opened Stage 2 at Rockwood Music Hall.

Being familiar with the New York music scene, I quickly realized how close knit the singer-songwriter crowd is. Having interviewed numerous New York musicians, Amber Rubarth’s  name has come up on several occasions as a source of inspiration. I quickly realized why last Friday.

Rubarth kicked off the night with the moving “In the Creases.” With oboe accompaniment and her comforting vocals, the room stood still. Throughout the night musician friends took the stage to provide backing vocals, piano and guitar accompaniment or perform tracks of their own.

The rustic country-esque “This Is Real” showcased Rubarth and Peter Bradley Adams on vocals and Tony Maceli on bass while jazzy ballad “Full Moon In Paris” introduced Ian Axel on piano. French songstress Julie Peel took the stage for “Song to Thank the Stars,” a track Rubarth joked about writing in France. “It’s a lot harder to write a love song than a breakup song. So I only have one,” she said.

Before crowd favorite Ari Hest took the stage, Rubarth concluded, “It’s more like a party than a show tonight.” And that it was. The audience, mostly filled with fellow musicians, didn’t seem to mind.

Debuting her newest song, “Letter From My Lonelier Self,” alone on guitar, Rubarth reminded everyone why they were there. With moving lyrics, “You’ll hear the answers if you listen/When it’s love don’t wait to say what it is/And don’t trade love for an aimless embrace of the wind/Please don’t lose your love like I did,” and her wavering vocals, the song struck a chord.

Original tracks “Pilot,” written with Nate Campany, “Good Mystery,” “Edge of My Seat” and the award winning “Washing Day,” co-written with Adam Levy, rounded out the set with additional guest appearances. Ian Axel, Greg Holden and Ari Hest performed a few songs of their own before Rubarth and Hest closed the night with a cover of Tom Waits’ “Hold On.”

While Rubarth’s touring schedule takes her to Europe next month, New York fans will be relieved to know Rockwood remains her favorite venue. “This is the greatest place I’ve ever been. Hands down. Expanded it’s more beautiful then I ever imagined,” she said.

Fellow singer-songwriter Nate Campany summed up the night. “Amber is a rare talent and we’re all lucky to have her as a friend and inspiration.”

Artist of the Week: Ari Hest

There is nothing I enjoy more than going to a concert and discovering new music. This past Friday, I attended Amber Rubarth’s show at Rockwood Music Hall (review to come soon) and walked away with a list of several new artists to showcase. One singer in particular was Ari Hest. With deep vocals that bring resemblance to Mat Kearney, he captivated all in attendance while onstage.

Piano centered tracks like “Avalanche” accompany Hest’s vocals beautifully. The piano never overpowers, and instead assists Hest’s voice to soar in the perfect direction. “Stalking the Moon” continue to showcase his raspy vocals with light guitar picking. Throughout each song, it is the lyrics that truly move the listener. Accompanied with fitting melodies, Hest’s descriptive lyrics transfer impeccably with his emotional vocals.

Ari Hest’s tracks on MySpace don’t do him justice, so I’ve included a few live performance videos below. For more, be sure to check out his Web site.

Song of the Week: “More”

Earlier this week, Tyrone Wells debuted the music video for single, “More” off his album, Remain. Named one of You Sing, I Write’s top five concerts of 2009, I was lucky enough to chat with Wells last year right before one of his showcases at SXSW. A powerful performer, he filled me in on his songwriting process, whether he’d rather someone witness him live first or hear his record and the inspiration behind some of his songs, including “More.”

A track that almost didn’t make the record, of “More,” Wells said, “It’s really the age old search of mankind to find more meaning, whether it be faith in God or faith in humanity or hope for a better day and hope that we can see people loving each other in this world and coming together instead of always separating. Less selfishness and more togetherness.

“I think everybody who hears that song plugs their own life into it and whatever is more for that person is what they draw from it. I met a girl who really wants to write screenplays and she adopted the song as her mantra. For me, it was the age old search for God and connecting to him and finding more meaning in that.”

For more of my interview with Tyrone Wells, click here and watch the music video for “More” below. Currently on tour with Tony Lucca and Roy Jay, be sure to visit his MySpace for dates. I’ll be catching his show this Wednesday in NYC, so be sure to follow me on Twitter for live concert updates!

PT Walkley, Greg Holden and Ian Axel Perform at Joe’s Pub Tonight

Quite possibly my favorite thing about being a music journalist is discovering new bands before they make it big. Whether my coverage precedes a write-up in Rolling Stone or a song being placed in hit TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, in a way it helps confirm that my music taste is ahead of the curve. Or, so I’d like to think!

I’m excited tonight to be catching three sets at Joe’s Pub, two of which are bands I’ve already covered and interviewed. Feel free to follow along on Twitter as I’ll be reviewing the show live. And, if you haven’t yet, check out my interview with Greg Holden here and PT Walkley here. For more on each artist, you can find their MySpace below.

Mat Kearney Live at Ramapo Tonight

I’ll be catching Mat Kearney tonight at Ramapo College with my cousins and covering it on Twitter if you’d like to follow along. I rated his New York performance last year as one my top 5 concerts of 2009 and am psyched to see his set tonight! His latest release, City of Black & White is easily one of my most listened to albums of 2009 and my cousin shares the same sentiments.

Every now and then a band sings a song that really hits home. Maybe something major is going on in your life, making you take a step back and reassess things. Perhaps you’re just confused as to the direction you’re headed and a simple three minute song clarifies it all for you. If you are really lucky, a friend or family member feels exactly the same way. This is partly why I’m so excited to share tonight with my cousins.

Last year, a few days before my birthday, I received by far the nicest message anyone could ever say to me via text. My cousin is going to kill me for typing this up, but (being part Italian) I have TONS of cousins so most likely he will still remain (somewhat) anonymous. I thought I’d share it with you all since many of you have been following my adventures since day one and are practically family already.

“Hey Annie what’s up, I’ve been reading your blog and it’s awesome. I can’t wait until your name is published in a HUGE MAGAZINE, because I know it will be, and I just wanted to ask you if you ever interview Mat Kearney again just let me know please. I really want you to tell him how much he influenced my life and how amazing his lyrics are, they really touched me. But above him, I care more about you. I can’t wait until I see the words ‘Annie Reuter, editor in chief’ in the ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine. Good luck I love you.”

Every now and then when I start to rethink this crazy life of mine as a music journalist I reread this text and it puts life back into perspective. I can’t wait to enjoy the show tonight as a music fan, and most importantly with my family.

Feel free to follow the show tonight on Twitter. For more on Mat Kearney, visit his Web site. If you haven’t listened to my interview with Mat, click here to learn about his latest album, writing process and stories behind the songs. Joshua Radin Brings Intimate Story Telling to Hard Rock Cafe

Joshua Radin pleased all in attendance at Thursday night’s intimate gig at Hard Rock Cafe in New York’s Times Square. Playing a 40-minute set, Radin performed nine songs with his band. Rotating between old and new tracks, he created a dialogue with the audience, filling them in on the stories behind his songs and responding to questions and requests from fans when asked.

“It’s good to be home,” Radin said after taking the stage while tuning his guitar. “You gotta play in tune when you’re in New York City,” he joked before “Brand New Day,” a track off his latest album, Simple Times. Radin’s soft singing was never overpowered by the instrumental accompaniment and throughout the night the crowd was so quiet his voice was the only thing heard.

“I’m going to play you a sad song,” he told the crowd. Midway through a fan screamed it was her birthday, to which Radin asked her name and dedicated “One of Those Days” to her, but not before revealing the heartache behind the song. “This is the only song I ever wrote in the bunk of a tour bus. It was freezing in Minneapolis and the bus wouldn’t start and my girlfriend and I just split up.”

Another fan interrupts and screams, “Screw her!” and Radin laughs and continues his tale.

“A girl was standing outside the bus waiting for me to come out. This 14-year-old girl shoved a picture with my ex-girlfriend in my face to sign. Not the easiest thing to do, but I got a song out of it.”

With light guitar accompaniment and beautiful, emotive vocals Radin sings of heartbreak. “The sight of you is painful/So I crawl underneath my blanket where I can hide away/I know I can’t take it anymore/’Cause I see now it’s just one of those days.”

Radin said “No Envy, No Fear” was inspired by an idea from Bob Dylan’s biography and the best advice Dylan was ever given, “to lose all envy and all fear.”

“At the time, I had so much envy and fear. Every time I play this song it helps me. Hopefully it helps you too,” he said. Performing without a mic at the edge of the stage on acoustic guitar, Radin’s voice reverberated throughout the venue. The audience was impressed and Radin seemed equally surprised. “It’s rare when you get an audience so quiet when you can do that,” he said.

Fans were happy to hear Radin is in the process of making a new record and got to witness a few new tracks Thursday night. “I’ve got this crazy badass rhythm section on this next song called ‘Starting Over.'” A much darker and fuller sound than previous records, the crowd seemed pleased.

“I’m starting over so here we go/If I fall way down, down/Would you catch me?” Radin sang. “Something in the way you looked at me that day/Like someone far away you once knew,” he continued. The instrumental interlude included heavier percussion, keyboards and guitar which helped emphasize the emotion behind Radin’s vocals.

It’s hard to believe Radin just started playing music five years ago. Having been on tour for the past four, he told the crowd “The Ones With the Light” was inspired from the people he meets on tour. With a fun melodica feature and increased electric guitar presence, Radin’s newer material proves promising.

“The Rock and the Tide” is so new, Radin hasn’t even taught the band yet. While explaining the song and how it is about someone he met on the road, Radin said, “When you’re in this business you meet a lot of people being on tour. Either they’re cool or they’re not.”

“Were they cool?” a fan asked.

“Yes she was very cool,” Radin replied with a grin. The lyrics explain the song best: “Everyone gets what they want too fast these days/No one knows the way to make things last/Katie I’m through waiting/’Cause I need you now/I’ll show how you could take my hand and save me.”

Radin closed the night with three well known songs; “Today,” “I’d Rather Be With You” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.” Having become well known as a wedding song, Radin said “Today” wasn’t inspired by a wedding as he’s never been married. “Every time I hear someone used it I’m very flattered.”

“I was expecting people not to listen tonight, but I’m so glad you did so I’m going to do something special,” Radin told the crowd. Ending the night with Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” Radin and his entire band walked off the stage with their instruments in hand and performed in the middle of the floor as fans gathered in a circle around them. I couldn’t think of a better way to end the night.

Artist of the Week: Michael Nappi

At first listen, it never would have occurred to me that Here We Go Again was Michael Nappi‘s debut album. Incredibly well produced, the album encompasses 13 versatile and radio friendly tracks. Recorded with producer/songwriter Steve Buonanotte and mixed by Grammy Award-winning mix engineer, Jeff Juliano (John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews Band), Here We Go Again is a solid debut release. One can only wonder when Nappi will rightfully explode on the music scene.

Nappi’s passion for music began at an early age with his introduction to his father’s vintage LPs that included The Beatles, Johnny Cash and Elvis. While in fourth-grade, he picked up trumpet and could frequently be found serenading his neighbors from his porch. As a teen, Nappi composed, recorded and performed his music locally.

Of performing, Nappi says, “Whether it’s been to five people slung over their bar stools or to sold out crowds in 5,000-seat theaters, I’ve always considered it a privilege to work as a musician.”

Whether he’s talking about broken promises and failed relationships in “7:26,” or infatuation on “Disturbed,” his singing intrigues the listener. A mix of acoustic ballads and more energetic rock numbers, one thing is certain: Nappi’s memorable melodies won’t leave your head.

While his singing style is reminiscent to that of Train’s Pat Monahan, it’s his versatility that impresses most. Here We Go Again was created from a collection of personal stories and, as a result, encompasses introspective and relatable lyrics. On first single, the catchy and haunting “7:26,” Nappi sings: “Every drop of rain/Has a story to be told/Before it hits the ground/Giving up and letting go.”

With more of an upbeat, electronic beat “Save the Night In a Bottle” hints at the grandeur ambiance of U2. Begging resemblance to U2’s “Magnificent,” the listener can practically envision Nappi sharing the stage with Bono.

The production quality on Here We Go Again is impressive and Nappi continues to surprise the listener on each track. “Perfectly Clear” features deeper vocals from Nappi with soaring guitar interludes and spot on percussion accompaniment while “Limousine” is a fun party number inviting a girl to “take a ride in my limousine.” With a debut release this good, Nappi’s “Limousine” dream may become reality.

Artist of the Week: MoZella

Detroit-based singer MoZella is an artist to watch. Reminiscent to that of Macy Gray, Norah Jones and Duffy with her infectious vocals, you will undeniably be humming her music long after the last note is played. A versatile artist, MoZella blends pop, soul, and jazz into endless tales of life and love.

While her sophomore album, Belle Isle, hits stores tomorrow, MoZella is not new to the music scene. In fact, you’ve probably heard clips of her songs in Nivea commercials and shows like “One Tree Hill,” “Las Vegas,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Bones” and more. Not to mention, she’s been on tour with notable bands like the Dave Matthews Band, Lifehouse, Five For Fighting, Daniel Powter, Michelle Branch and Colbie Caillat.

MoZella’s tale is that of hard work and determination. Moving to the West Coast after graduating high school to pursue music, when things didn’t develop as quickly as she hoped, MoZella found herself decorating cakes by day and performing in coffee shops at night. All her hard work eventually paid off, as she was signed to Madonna’s Maverick Records in 2004. Nearly five years later, MoZella is back with her sophomore release.

“Magic (Oh Oh Oh),” current single off Belle Isle, is a fun track with catchy “oh-oh-oh’s” and fitting lyrics. “Went down to the river/To wash all my cares away/Saw a little fish swimming and here’s what he had to say/He said, ‘Girl don’t you know/Life is just so easy when you go with the flow,'” she sings. With upbeat percussion accompaniment and her playful vocals, the listener can’t help but believe her.

A pining love story, “Freezing” is a more jazzy and soulful number. The song invokes the pain of lost love with MoZella singing, “The seasons may change/But the ice still remains in my soul/You’re so cold.” Moving past lost love, “More of You” is an optimistic and soulful track. “So it goes without saying that I’m hooked on you/And by now I’m out of my mind with this self abuse/I guess I should have looked out for myself/I guess that I could have found someone else/But I never met anyone who’s love made me so damn crazy.” With songs this catchy, MoZella will be a household name in no time.

Must Hear Track: Standout song on MySpace is Motown hit, “I Second That Emotion” with the legendary Smokey Robinson.
