Song of the Week: "Christmas All Over Again"

For the past four years, Benjamin Wagner has been recording “A Holiday Benefit,” an annual collaboration of holiday classics and originals sung by some of New York’s finest musicians. Each year, the proceeds from the charity compilation benefits 826NYC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and helping teachers inspire their students to write.

This year’s release, “A Holiday Benefit, Vol. 4”  features brand-new recordings from Charlotte Sometimes, Rachel Platten, Chris Abad, Benjamin Wagner & Mai Bloomfield, Bryan Dunn, Casey Shea, and more.

“A Holiday Benefit” has raised nearly $10,000 for students’ creative and expository writing tutoring since 2007. Help them reach $10K this Thursday and celebrate the album’s release at Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 2. The evening will be hosted by NY1’s Roger Clark, with special guest, comedian Negin Farsad.

Song of the Week: "December 24th"

With December in full swing, it’s nearly impossible to go anywhere and not hear holiday music being played. While Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole classics never get tiresome, it’s refreshing to hear a band put a new spin on holiday music.

That’s where Sean Smith and the Setting Sons comes in.

With a new release just in time for the holidays, their latest EP includes two songs perfect for the lonesome and those in love. Though the lyrics behind “December 24th” are somewhat somber, the upbeat musical accompaniment grabs the listener. With soaring guitar and polished piano interludes  joined by solid percussion and Smith’s relentless vocals, it’s hard to stop from humming along.

December 24th/All I want For Christmas (Is Mine Tonight) was produced by David Immergluck (guitarist, Counting Crows) and features Jim Bogios on drums and Charley Gillingham on keyboards. To purchase the song, visit iTunes and be sure to catch Sean Smith and the Setting Sons tonight at Rockwood Music Hall and December 17 at Banjo Jims. For more, visit their Web site.

Song of the Week: "Mrs. Mistletoe"

It’s that time of year again! Thanksgiving is officially over and with any luck all the leftovers have been eaten and your holiday shopping is finished. (Wishful thinking, I know!)

As December approaches, I’ll be posting a new holiday song each week. So, be sure to leave your favorite holiday tunes in the comments and let me know if there are any unique covers you’ve been diggin’.

Earlier this year, I featured Adam Taylor as an artist to watch. The Pennsylvania native wrote a Christmas song for WXPN in Philadelphia and is offering his track, “Mrs. Mistletoe” for a free download. Instead of paying for the song, Taylor is encouraging everyone to donate to Music for Everyone, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness and resources to strengthen the role that music plays in our schools and communities.

“This is my gift to you, a little song we wrote and recorded for you called “Mrs. Mistletoe” — Now let me tell you about “gifts.” I believe that giving a gift just because it’s an arbitrary date is silly. If a gift lacks personal sacrifice, it’s an empty gesture. This is why sometimes that macaroni necklace is so much more beautiful than a 20 dollar gift card to Target. Ask yourself this question — Do you need any more THINGS? Do you even WANT to make a difference?

I’m the musician that I am today because of the wonderful music programs that were offered to me as a child. If you enjoy “Mrs. Mistletoe” then PLEASE, as a gift to me, yourself, and especially the children, make a small, modest contribution to MUSIC FOR EVERYONE.”

Song of the Week: "Hello World"

An incredibly moving song and equally emotional music video, Lady Antebellum’s “Hello World” strikes a chord. Watch the video below and read my writeup about it on Busted Halo.

Song of the Week: “Our Kind of Love”

Their third No. 1 single off sophomore release, Need You Now, Lady Antebellum have been making waves in the music scene. Being that I’ll be interviewing them next week and spent the past few days researching and watching old videos, I thought it’d be fitting to make “Our Kind of Love” my song of the week.

If you have any questions you’ve been dying to ask Lady A, let me know in the comments!

Song of the Week: “Until You”

Gearing up for Miranda Lambert’s concert next week at Terminal 5, I’ve been listening to country music all day. (Not that I don’t normally listen to country music to begin with…) I came across Billy Currington’s song, “Until You” off his latest release and decided to make it my song of the week until I found out it was a cover of Dave Barnes’ original. Having featured Barnes on the blog several times, I couldn’t believe that I had never heard it before. Watch the video below, I’d love to know your thoughts!

Song of the Week: “Magic”

While it’s been in constant rotation on many radio stations recently, I cannot get enough of this track. “Magic” features B.o.B. rapping with guest vocals from Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo. With a catchy beat and a music video that makes crowd surfing look so tempting, it’s the perfect song to distract you from the realization that summer is over.

Song of the Week: “Life Is a Highway”

Summer is winding down (I know, I’m sorry. No one wants to hear this), but that doesn’t mean the end of  road trips, BBQs and good music. This week’s song of the week is inspired by Sammy, Darla and Julia, three girls about to embark on a 20-city road trip to discover authentic stories of food, fashion and music throughout the nation.

Watch the video below to find out more on the idea behind Road Hug USA as they embark on their road trip next week.

Song of the Week: “Bye Bye Bye”

Remember that catchy chorus and those impeccable dance moves? Who doesn’t? This week’s song of the week, *NSync’s “Bye Bye Bye” is dedicated to my best friend since 6th grade, Ansela. She’ll be getting married this weekend and then moving to Texas, so it’s a bit bittersweet for everyone.

We grew up knowing each and every lyric to *NSync and Backstreet Boys tunes and forever debated who was the better boy band. We went to our first concert together, (BSB – I was the hugest BSB fan) and second concert (*NSync – Ansela LOVED them). We even used to fantasize about which member we would marry, she loved Lance of *NSync and my favorite was Brian of BSB. I’ve already said more than enough to embarrass us both, so go ahead and watch the video below. Enjoy!
