Song of the Week: "Brighter Than the Sun"

The first track off her upcoming release, All of You, current single, “Brighter Than the Sun” grabs the listener right away. With fast paced guitar and Colbie Caillat’s infectious vocals, the the track is a descriptive tale about being love-struck at first glance. Hand-clapped rhythms and Caillat’s upbeat singing style make “Brighter Than the Sun” the perfect track to kick-start summer.

“I usually like to start my albums by easing my way in,” Caillat says. “But ‘Brighter Than the Sun’ has a punch. It’s so up-tempo and happy. My manager actually requested that it be No. 1, and he was right. This song is awesome because it just gets people started right away and interested in what’s next. A different instrument leads into each part of the song. It never stays the same, which keeps listeners wanting to hear what’s next.”

I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot of it this summer. All of You hits stores July 12. Listen to “Brighter Than the Sun” below as well as my previous interviews with her.

Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs Perform "Live On Letterman"

It’s been just over two years since I witnessed Ray Lamontagne in concert for the first time. After seeing him earlier this month, it is evident that he continues to be a force to see live. On May 11 he shyly walked onto the Letterman stage clad in a jean jacket, jeans and flannel shirt before he kicked things off with the soulful “Repo Man.” With a driving percussion and guitar interlude towards the end of the song, the band impressed.

Not one of many words, there was little onstage banter with the audience throughout the show besides the occasional “Thank you.” Before he began “New York City’s Killing Me,” he whispered into the microphone, “Take a deep breath” to which the room laughed. A slower, more somber track, LaMontagne’s soft vocals accompanied by the band’s soothing rhythms while wavering pedal steel gave the track a rustic, country feel.

The remainder of his set included many tracks off the band’s latest release, God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise as well as some older fan favorites. While “Beg Steal or Borrow” and “This Love Is Over” continued the slow pace, it was on encore number “Henry Nearly Killed Me (It’s a Shame)” that LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs wowed the audience. With a rollicking beat, foot stomping and soaring harmonica, the track had the entire audience on their feet and clapping along.

Band of the Week: River James

Earlier this week, Virginia-based band River James released their debut four song EP. No strangers to the music industry, frontman Vince Scheuerman, formerly of Army of Me, and drummer Jacob Marshall, formerly of MAE, met while on tour years ago. Bass player John “Scoops” Hutchins and guitarist Tyler Strickland were added to the mix during a canoe trip along the James River in Virginia. After 410 miles, much soul searching and bonding, they decided to tell their story to the world in song.

The songs were recorded live with the goal to produce an organic and raw sound. With honest lyrics and light music accompaniment, each track allows room for Scheuerman’s delicate singing style to leave a lasting impact.

“We would like to keep it organic, with acoustic guitar or piano in each song. And the idea is to run the gamut of dynamics, from the whisper of one man and his guitar, to the full band hitting you with everything they have,” Scheuerman said.

The EP begins with the haunting “Avenue A.” A song that discusses the struggles of alcoholism, crushed dreams and soul searching, the stripped down track strikes a chord. With light guitar strumming and Scheuerman’s questioning lyrics, the song has an intimate feel, as if the band is letting the listener into their recording studio with them.

“I’m wondering is this all that I get, everything I worked for/The few that I called my dear friends have finally walked out the door,” Scheuerman sings. This begins the constant questioning of one’s path in life, a theme frequently portrayed throughout the EP. Mid-song the beat picks up with wavering electric guitar and background percussion as Scheuerman continues to sing with passion.

Standout track “Heart Of Love” follows suit with Scheuerman’s familiar whispered vocals. With fitting percussion and soaring guitar parts, he sings of love. A beautiful tale, the song was inspired by one woman’s heartbreaking discovery.

“I wrote this song after I’d heard the story of a woman who found out she had terminal cancer and one year to live. There was no treatment option for her. So her husband took the next year of his job off, and just spent that year with her. They travelled and did all the things that she wanted to do before she died and he just enjoyed the time that he had with her, knowing that it was limited. The song is meant to be his words to her,” Scheuerman writes.

The EP continues with a new relatable issue: the universal desire for intimacy. Influenced by a Bruce Springsteen song, “In My Blood” embodies striking vocals while a steady percussion beat and guitar accompaniment  round out the track. The album comes full circle with last track, “Dreams.” A song about struggling to pursue your dreams in the midst of endless obstacles, it strikes a chord.

“I pray we not forget our dreams” Scheuerman sings, convincing the listener to pursue his passion. No doubt influenced by his own experience, the listener finds solace that if River James didn’t leave their dreams behind, we shouldn’t either.

YSIW Featured on Her Campus

The past four years have been unlike anything I could have possibly dreamed up. When starting You Sing I Write back in October 2007, I never thought it would grow as much as it has and I’d be able to interview some of my favorite musicians — although that was always the goal!

Recently, Gennifer Delman interviewed me for Her Campus, an online magazine for college women. I’m featured in “How She Got There” where they spotlight successful women in different industries.

It’s such an honor to be recognized for my work over the past few years! You can read the full feature here and learn a little bit more about how I got my start. In other news, I’m psyched to announce I’ll be headed to Nashville this June to cover the 40th annual CMA Music Festival! Be sure to let me know which artists you want me to interview and if you have any spots you recommend me checking out while in Nashville!

Pat McGee Band Brings Intimacy to Maxwell’s

In an age where social media gives music fans closer access to artists, Pat McGee Band continues to showcase its relevance. Throughout their nearly two-hour performance, frontman McGee dedicated a track to a fan who hasn’t seen them live in 10 years, all thanks to a Facebook message he received.

“See, I’m the guy on Facebook that responds to you,” he said.

Later in the night, McGee went on to explain a suspicious Facebook message he received asking for his home address that read, “I have something you lost that you might miss.” Four days later a stolen guitar was returned to him.

Additionally, McGee has taken to Facebook to talk to his fans on a daily basis and fill them in on his latest record, No Wrong Way to Make It Right. Friday night acted as a private release party for Pat McGee Band. Although the album isn’t “officially” out yet, McGee said he had some copies available for eager fans.

While concertgoers seemed pleased to hear the new material, it was the older classics that caused the most excitement. The band kicked off their set to screams and played energetic fan favorite “Rebecca.” With a fast-paced musical introduction, Pat McGee Band quickly captured audience attention.

Song of the Week: "Kiss Me Slowly"

A few weeks ago, Virginia-based band Parachute released “Kiss Me Slowly,” a beautiful ballad written with Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood. With a similar sound to their previous hit, “She Is Love,” soft percussion, piano and guitar combined with frontman Will Anderson’s smooth vocals, makes it a sure bet that this track will follow with similar success.

Parachute is gearing up for the release of their sophomore album, The Way It Was, due out later this month. Watch the music video below with a special introduction by Lady A and be sure to read my previous interviews with both bands.

Puppet's Jazz Bar Faces Closure – Again

After months of financial struggle, Park Slope’s famed jazz club, Puppet’s Jazz Bar, might open its doors for the last time this evening.

Even despite a community bailout last summer – where $21,000 was raised to help keep the venue open – owners say that the Fifth Avenue music venue just can’t keep afloat.

“People simply have less money to spend, and so we are making less money. We are getting people through our doors less often, and when they come they are spending, on average, half of what they used to,” said co-owner Martin Fagin.

Tonight Fagin and co-owner Jamie Affoumado will host what could be one last blowout jazz performance, in hopes of raising enough funds to keep the doors open a little longer. Local jazz staples such as Arturo O’Farrill, Alex Blake, Randy Johnston, John McNeil and more are set to perform.
