Song of the Week: “She Is Love”

You may remember them as Sparky’s Flaw from my interview and concert coverage last year. Since then, a lot has changed for the Virginia-based band. Their name: Parachute. Record deal: Mercury. Released debut full-length: Losing Sleep. Not to mention, their single, “She Is Love” is currently climbing the charts and they have upcoming tour dates with Kelly Clarkson, Secondhand Serenade, and The Script. Watch their video for “She Is Love” below, and if you haven’t yet, read my interview with frontman Will Anderson here.

Song of the Week: “If It Kills Me”

It’s a bit serendipitous when two of your closest friends living in completely different parts of the country recommend the same song within 24 hours. This was the case for this week’s song of the week, “If It Kills Me” by Jason Mraz.

Elaine sent me this imeem link of Jason’s song, stating, “I’m in lovvve with this song. Especially the lyrics…sooo beautiful.”

The next day, Sarah asked me if I watch “So You Think You Can Dance.” I don’t, but she referred me to her personal blog, Picks and Tangencies where she posted a video of two dancers performing to “If It Kills Me.” From watching the episode you really get the history of Mraz’s track and inspiration from the choreography behind the performance. Truly something beautiful and artistic that only adds to the song.

Watch the video of the performance from “So You Think You Can Dance” below.

What do you think? Do the dancers give a good portrayal of the song? Love to know your thoughts!

Song of the Week: “Healing Time”

I made Josh Charles an “Artist of the Week” feature a few months ago after discovering his music on MySpace. Since then, Josh has been extremely busy promoting his single, “Healing Time,” in which all the proceeds go to the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans to help rebuild the city after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. With a recent feature on CNN, Josh’s earnest goal of 1 million downloads seems closer to reality.

Watch him perform “Healing Time” and download the song on iTunes as well as Amazon here.

My Top Five Favorite CMA Week Songs

CMA week has definitely turned me into a country music fan. I know there are so many stereotypes, but give these songs a listen and maybe they’ll change your opinion on country music. If they do, and you want to catch a show sometime be sure to let me know!

“I Run To You” by Lady Antebellum
I absolutely love this song. After hearing them play it live at their fan party as well as the nightly concert at LP Field I was hooked. I was lucky enough to visit the spot where they filmed the music video for the song — Dunn Bros Coffee — where one of the baristas filled me in on the story behind the video. You can watch it below. If you like it, check out “Lookin’ For A Good Time” (another one of my favorites) here.

“All I Want To Do” by Sugarland

The chorus just won’t leave my head. “All I want to do-o-o-o-o-o.” Give it a listen on YouTube, I think you’ll agree.

“Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band

Zac Brown Band blew me away during their performance Friday night at LP Field. I haven’t seen a band with that much energy and diversity in a while. (See about 4:15 minutes in). Love the lines “You know I like my chicken fried/Cold beer on a Friday night/A pair of jeans that fit just right/And the radio up.” Come on, don’t you?

“Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” by Darius Rucker

Hootie & the Blowfish fans have followed frontman Darius Rucker embrace a solo country career and his debut album was praised by critics and fans alike. I took a personal liking to Rucker the first night of the press conference. Still new the the press conference setup, I kept raising my hand and trying to ask him a question when everyone else talked over one another jumping in over me.

When the publicist in charge told the crowd “last question” I was bummed that I didn’t get my question in. Darius must have noticed though, because he pointed at me after and said, “You’ve been so patient this whole time. What’s your question?” Extremely surprised that he called on me, it gave me the confidence I needed to be more aggressive the rest of the week, seeing that the artists really do notice and acknowledge you if you’re patient. Watch the music video for “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It” here.

What do you think? Do you like any of the songs? I’ll be introducing you to some musicians with my upcoming interviews and I’d love to hear of your favorite country musicians.

Song of the Week: “Live Like You Were Dying”

Gearing up for Nashville this coming week, all I’ve been listening to lately is country music. I’m trying to get myself acquainted to as many country artists as I can and stumbled upon Tim McGraw’s song, “Live Like You Were Dying.” A moving tale, there’s something about country music that tears on your heartstrings. I may be turning into a country girl pretty soon…

Song of the Week: “Tiny Dancer”

The past three weeks literally have been a whirlwind. From starting a new job in NYC to catching at least two shows a week, it’s been insane, but at the same time one of my most inspiring months yet. Not only did I get to cover the legendary Zootopia concert and interview some amazing bands (see me interviewing Fergie above!!!), but I have become even more convinced that this whole music thing is what I absolutely have to continue and pursue to no end.

Whether it was interviewing Mat Kearney on his tour bus this past Tuesday and getting a behind-the-scenes look at life on the road, or seeing a band perform live as they convert every person in the room as fans, it’s just been one of those light bulb moments.

What better song then, to feature than Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer?” Every time I hear it I think of my all-time favorite film “Almost Famous.” And, amazingly enough, the past few weeks I have been living out the movie myself.
