Song of the Week: “Why Georgia”

This past week has been a whirlwind of changes. When reflecting on life and next steps I always turn to music. After missing my last bus home to Jersey last week after a stressful day of apartment searching John Mayer’s “Why Georgia” came on my iPod. Though the song is a decade old and I’ve heard it at least a million times, it struck a chord. Maybe my quarter life crisis has finally struck, but his lyrics really hit home.

“Everybody is just a stranger but/That’s the danger in going my own way/I guess it’s the price I have to pay/ Still ‘everything happens for a reason’/Is no reason not to ask myself if I’m living it right.”

Regardless of his status in the tabloids and my friends tiring of my obsession of him, his music always manages to make an impact on me. Watch the video below of “Why Georgia” and be sure to follow my concert coverage [cough: gushing] on Twitter tonight when I catch his show in Pennsylvania!

Song of the Week: “East Coast Anthem”

Whenever I’m in D.C. I find myself singing Good Charlotte’s song “East Coast Anthem.” Especially the opening lines, “Walking on the streets of D.C./On the east coast where I live.” I’m headed to D.C. for my friend Sarah’s wedding this weekend and you can bet I’ll be screaming those words as soon as I get there.

I was OBSESSED with Good Charlotte in high school, even convinced I’d marry Benji (haha…some things never change). That is definitely a post for another day. For now, enjoy some old school Good Charlotte footage, circa 1999.

Cut to 2:20 for their live performance of “East Coast Anthem.”

Remember their song, “Hold On?” Such a powerful video.

This was my favorite…”Movin’ On.” I think I need to write a post of my crazy encounters with Good Charlotte. Next week maybe…what do you think?

Song of the Week: “American Slang”

If you’ve been following You Sing I Write at all over the past two years, you know of my love for Jersey boys The Gaslight Anthem. Earlier this week, they released the music video for “American Slang,” the title track and debut single off their new album.

Set in New York, the music is agressive with unrelenting percussion and soaring guitar riffs, all underneith frontman Brian Fallon’s powerful vocals. Watch it below! And, if you missed my review of their album release show, you can read it here.

Song of the Week: “Push Push”

Last Thursday, Kat DeLuna impressed the packed crowd at Santos Party House for Girls Who Rock with her catchy beats and seductive dance moves. This week, she debuts the new video for latest single, “Push Push” featuring Akon.

Sure to be a summer hit, she even picked a fan from the crowd to teach him and the entire audience the official “Push Push” dance. Watch the videos below and learn it yourself!

Song of the Week: Country Edition

Being that just around this time last year I was in Nashville covering my first country festival (and first country concert for that matter), I found it fitting to pick a few country songs to feature this week. Keith Urban is one of the first acts I discovered back in college and I’m excited to post a video from his CMT Crossroads performance with John Mayer. I think you’ll love it!

My next track is by an up-and-coming band that is starting to make waves in the country scene. Indiana based Shakin’ Bake will share the stage with country superstars Luke Bryan, Justin Moore, Randy Travis, Bucky Covington this summer. Listen to current single, the emotional “The Underdog” a listen here.

Nashville based country artist Chelsea Rae has a powerful vocal style that brings to mind Carrie Underwood with a rock side that recalls Miranda Lambert. Having garnered an audition for the coveted Sunday Night Writer’s Night at the famous Music City Bluebird Café, Rae is well on her way. Give her a listen on MySpace.

Song of the Week: “You and I”

Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Jenna Bryson sent me  her new single last week and I instantly fell in love with it. Her airy vocals sounds familiar and beg reference to fellow Californian Colbie Caillat, but with distinct personality. Her music has been described as, “If Kelly Clarkson and Sarah McLachlan had a baby and then sent it to be raised by Jewel.”

Bryson’s voice soars over the music beautifully on “You and I” and switches gears midway through the song with edgier percussion and more forceful vocals. It’s unexpected and puts her in a category of her own.

You can listen to “You and I” on MySpace, Facebook and Last.fm. Take your pick, and let me  know what you think! You’ll be hearing much more from Bryson in the upcoming months as a new record is on the way.

Song of the Week: “Honey And the Moon”

Last night, I caught Joseph Arthur‘s impressive set at Maxwell’s in Hoboken (review to come). One of the most unique shows I have witnessed, Arthur painted at the start of end of his set, his artwork up for sale at the end of the night.

In addition to painting, Arthur looped drum, guitar, and harmonica alongside his vocals with the help of multiple loop pedals and took many eager fan’s requests shouted out to him. One of my favorites was his acoustic performance of “Honey And the Moon.” A beautiful ballad with descriptive and relatable lyrics, it demonstrates Arthur’s talent as a singer-songwriter.

Watch the video of Joseph Arthur performing “Honey And the Moon” a few years ago on the “Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn.” To listen to his music, visit Arthur on MySpace.

Song of the Week: “God Gave Me You”

I received an email about Dave Barnes’ latest video “God Gave Me You” earlier this week and instantly fell in love with it. Maybe it was my sister’s wedding approaching and the constant wedding talk over the past few weeks, but the lyrics and story behind the song really struck a chord. It makes sense though, considering he wrote the song as an ode to his wife, PopEater reports.

“I believe that people are built for community with each other. We often times take relationship for granted,” Barnes said. “I wrote ‘God Gave Me You’ because I’m thankful for my wife, and how she makes me a better person.”

I have a feeling “God Gave Me You” will become a popular wedding song. What do you think?

Song of the Week: “Wrong Baby Wrong”

One of the most beautiful voices in country, Martina McBride has been singing her heart out for nearly two decades. With uplifting songs that celebrate friendship and independence, her music strikes a chord, particularly to young women.

I was lucky enough to meet and interview McBride last summer at the CMA Music festival where she gave me advice to relay to women working towards accomplishing their goals and overcoming obstacles: “Perseverance and support. If you can get support from your friends or from your family, that’s important.”

It’s no surprise that current single, “Wrong Baby Wrong Baby Wrong,” is a song that celebrates the friendship and support girlfriends can have when the wrong guy is finally “gone baby gone.”

Watch the video below for “Wrong Baby Wrong Baby Wrong.” I’ve included one of my favorite Martina McBride videos as well. What’s your favorite Martina song?
