Song of the Week: “Valentine”

As Valentine’s Day approaches (this Sunday for those of you that need reminding!), I’ve been receiving endless emails of Valentine-related MP3’s and EPs artists are releasing in the upcoming days. I reached out to my Twitter followers as to what some of their favorite Valentine’s Day songs are and received some great suggestions!

My favorite was from Joseph Bayot — “Valentine” by Kina Grannis. With beautiful airy vocals that recall Colbie Caillat and soothing guitar strumming, I’ve had the song on repeat all night. Listen to “Valentine” below. Love to know what you think!

A few weeks ago I featured my full interview with guitar goddess Orianthi. She’s played with all the guitar greats including Carlos Santana, Steve Vai and of course no one can forget her jaw-dropping performance in Michael Jackson’s This Is It film.

I met up with the 24-year-old Australian virtuoso when she was in New York promoting her debut album, Believe, and performing for fans. While she began playing guitar at the age of six, being a female guitarist hasn’t always been easy.

“Guitar is a guy’s thing. I’d get picked on a lot and school wasn’t exactly the easiest time,” Orianthi said. “Actually, my teacher told me I should play the harp, it’s more feminine. It’s kind of like being a male ballerina in a way … I loved playing guitar so much that I stuck at it. I just want to inspire more girls to pick it up and stick at it and believe in themselves with whatever they do. You just have to follow down your path.”

I had the privilege of interviewing Swedish songstress Theresa Andersson last year during CMJ and caught her captivating one woman show where she played multiple instruments with the help of two loop pedals.

Andersson recently made a video for catchy single “Birds Fly Away” in her hometown of New Orleans. Watch the video here.

Anya Marina Debuts “New Moon” Music Video

Yesterday Anya Marina released the music video for “Satellite Heart,” a new song which will be featured in the upcoming Twilight movie series, New Moon. With her mousy vocals and seductive musical accompaniment, “Satellite Heart” is sure to be a hit.

Saturday Song Addiction: Halloween Edition

Song of the Week: “Great Expectations”

Last night I witnessed Jersey’s own Gaslight Anthem firsthand at a packed Terminal 5 in New York. Definitely the most energetic crowd I have yet witnessed at a concert, fans started a mosh pit even before frontman Brian Fallon sang his first lyric. Performing for over an hour, the band showcased many songs from their most recent and revered release, The ’59 Sound as well as older classics from debut album, Sink or Swim and EP, Señor and the Queen.

While the audience showed their appreciation singing word for word, it was the band that looked in awe watching the craziness taking place on the floor as fans crowd surfed and moshed during most of the set. Having performed well over 300 concerts this year alone, the band’s current tour is winding down as they work on new material for The ’59 Sound‘s follow up. Rolling Stone reports the release is expected next year as Fallon stated in the issue, “The songs sound like Tom Waits’ storytelling and the Clash playing as a band, but with some big Motown-style choruses in there.” A must-see act, the Gaslight Anthem have a bright future ahead of them.

John Mayer Debuts Music Video For “Who Says”

Today, John Mayer released the video of latest single, “Who Says” on his YouTube channel. Announcing the video on his Twitter page, Mayer said, “Come spend a night out with my friends and I for three minutes.” The video follows Mayer for a night in New York as he plays guitar at a house party, dines at a swanky restaurant and does some stand-up at the Comedy Cellar.

Of the track, in a recent issue of Rolling Stone, Mayer said, “When I sing it, I think about walking around your house naked with a guitar. It’s about being in control of the pleasure in your life.”

Mayer will perform songs from his upcoming release, Battle Studies, November 17 at the Beacon Theatre in New York, which will be broadcast live on Fuse. Tickets are available to members of Local 83, his fan club, as a thank you for years of dedication.
